The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger is a very exciting book to read because no one ever knows what will happen next, which keeps people wanting to read more. The story talks about the life of a sixteen year old boy named Holden Caulfield, who is trying to live on his own in New York City. While living on his own he has to deal with all the people who surround him all the time, which he thinks are phonies. Holden says that everyone in the story is a bunch of phonies all because they act fake all the time. What Holden does not know is that he himself is a phony, but he would never admit it to himself or to anyone else for that matter. He is a phony by lying all the time, associating with people he hates, and acting phony.

Holden says that everyone in the story is a bunch of phonies all because they act fake all the time. What Holden does not know is that he himself is a phony, but he would never admit it to himself or to anyone else for that matter. He is a phony by lying all the time, associating with people he hates, and acting phony. All these were reasons to why Holden was considered a phony. When he lies he makes everyone else think that he is some other person than what he really is. Adding to the lying he also associates himself with people whom he hates like hanging out with old friends or classmates that he hates. Following the others there is the fact that he tells people that certain activities they do are phony, but he ends up doing them himself and along with that he also acts the way the phony people he hates act. In conclusion Holden Caulfield may not admit that he is phony, but with all these reasons stated it infers that he is in fact a phony and he will never change.
